The organizing pastors see such projects as a down payment on a sustained church movement to heal still festering wounds in poor communities resulting from a history of racism and injustice.

  • 1/8 ~ PRAYER "JOLTS" ~ What to Pray For by John Piper (desiringgod.org)
"If you are like me, you find that from time to time your prayer life needs a jolt out of the rut it has fallen into. When I wrote (Let the Nations Be Glad!), I gathered into one place all the things the early church prayed for. I printed this out for myself, and it has proven to be one of those “jolts” that I need. I thought you might find it helpful. You might want to print it out and keep it for a while in your Bible to guide you in your praying."

"One of the most common topics that I hear relating to mission leaders revolves around questions they have about the agency of the future ... what will it look like, how will it be different from today? Similar conversations are happening in relation to the future of how we do church. We intuitively understand, as ministry leaders, how important it is to see around the corner."
  • 1/5 ~ BOOKNOTES/LEADERSHIP ~ We're In This Boat Together by Camille F. Bishop ~ Outquotes selected by David Mays (davidmays.org)

Their relationships and responses to the challenges of the rapids form the metaphor for the fictional Handover Corporation going through leadership transition. Four adult generations are represented in the workplace today. Each generation has its unique leadership values and behaviors. • 10/30 ~ PARTNERSHIP ~ The Legacy of Antioch ~ Partnering with the Church of the Global South for the Sake of the Gospel by John Piper (desiringgod.org)
"Partnership in mission with the Global South does not mean that all the unreached peoples of the world can be reached by people who are in the Global South. Don’t buy into the idea that we should send our money, not our people. That would sound very much like: “Let them shed their blood, not ours; we’ll just send money."

Most Nigerian films, almost all of which are low-budget affairs shot on location and released on DVD, are spiritual in nature. About 20 percent are Christian ... aim(ed) at encouragement and evangelism more than sheer entertainment. Groups or churches often screen the films and follow them with discussions or an altar call."

The key to protecting people and information is to remember the “need-to-know” rule (explained earlier). ... It’s important to know the security issues for your specific people group, as each one is different. However, here are some specific guidelines ..."

Subtitle: "From Using Vacant Office Space to Job Clubs Help Unemployed Get Back on Track" ~ Now here's some creative thinking that can help spur Christian businesses with office space into making room for unemployed and underfunded brothers and sisters to set up offices so they can get back on their feet. It's also is a great way to reach out to our communities - by bringing in hurting non-believers into an environment where they can see the love of Christ in action.

People can meet weekly to listen, watch and discuss."
  • 10/8 ~ PERSECUTED CHURCH ~ Prisoner Alert Web Site ~ a ministry of Voice of the Martyrs (prisoneralert.com)
This powerful tool generates awareness of fellow believers (many of them church leaders) incarcerated and persecuted for their faith, and provides tips on how to pray for and write to them. It also shows ways to write and influence their persecutors. One suggested use for this site is introduce it to your family and invite your children to get involved in researching and praying with the whole family (dinner time?) for God's interventions and for grace to be poured out on each prisoner, their families, their churches and their persecutors.
  • 10/7 ~ THE GREAT COMMANDMENT ~ The Gospel and the Poor by Tim Keller (thegospelcoalition.org)
"The original question I was asked to address was "How does our commitment to the primacy of the gospel tie into our obligation to do good to all, especially those of the household of faith, to serve as salt and light in the world, to do good to the city?" I will divide this question into two parts: (1) If we are committed to the primacy of the gospel, does the gospel itself serve as the basis and motivation for ministry to the poor? (2) If so, how then does that ministry relate to the proclamation of the gospel?"

"This year the Evangelical Theological Society holds its annual meeting in New Orleans on Nov. 18-20, and one session warrants special attention. On Wednesday, Nov.18, 8 - 11 am, J P Moreland will chair a panel discussion of A Common Word, with John Piper and Al Mohler among the participants. What is A Common Word? In October 11, 2007, 138 Islamic clerics and scholars from 43 nations issued a joint statement called A Common Word Between Us and You. It invited Christians to come together with Muslims on the basis of what the two religions have in common. And what do they have in common? The document argues that Christianity, Islam, (and Judaism) all hold to the same two great commandments: love for God and love for neighbor. "

  • 9/29 ~ THE LOCAL CHURCH & MISSION ~ Five Reasons Missional Churches Don't Do Global Missions - and How to Fix It by Ed Stetzer (edstetzer.com)
"So how do we fully embrace missional without losing the mission? The Mission Exchange (formerly the Evangelical Foreign Mission Society) asked me to talk to their global leaders on the topic "How to Put 'Missions' Back into Missional." In my talk, I proposed four principles we needed to consider ...
    1) In rediscovering God's mission, many have only discovered its personal dimensions.
    2) In responding to God's mission, many have wanted to be more mission-shaped and have therefore made everything "mission."
    3) In relating God's mission, the message increasingly includes the hurting but less frequently includes the global lost.
    4) In refocusing on God's mission, many are focusing on being good news rather than telling good news."

  • 9/25 ~ PRAYER ~ Agreement Brings Breakthrough by Debbie Przybylski (intercessorsarise.blogspot.com)
"It’s easy to be divided into a million areas when we pray. The needs are so great. But the most powerful prayer meetings are often when everyone is in agreement about one thing at a time. We should learn to pray through a request until God moves us on to something else. We are one body with one voice seeking God together."
  • 9/24 ~ STRATEGIC VISION ~ The 4/14 Window - "The Core of the Core" by Luis Bush (tw-newgeneration.com)
"At the end of the last century I wrote a pamphlet entitled The 10/40 Window: Getting to the Core of the Core. In the first years of this new century, I am urging a new missional focus: The 4/14 Window. Although in a different sense, it too can be called “the core of the core.” The 10/40 Window referenced a geographic frame; the 4/14 Window describes a demographic frame—a life season comprising the ten years between the ages of 4 and 14. This booklet is an urgent appeal to consider the strategic importance and potential of the 1.2 billion children and youth in the 4/14 Window."

They do not require specially engineered buildings to make sure that the roof can handle the weight of the soil. Gardens can even be grown on the edge of a tin roof of a shanty. "

"Western Europe has seen a huge increase in immigrants, mostly from Third World countries. Many have little to no grasp of the English language. Because of all the prior mission work that’s happened in the 10/40 window, a good portion of these immigrants are evangelical Christians. And when they land here, they look for a church to join, which is a great thing. But it’s presented some interesting dilemmas in a country where less than 1% are evangelical Christian."

"If your community is anything like mine, it’s a much different place than it was a decade ago. You might remember a time when most people shopping in your supermarket spoke the same language as you, generally dressed the same way, and were born and raised in the general vicinity. Today, you pass by the curry sauce intended for Indian customers, your groceries are scanned by an elderly Chinese man, and then your food is packed by an immigrant from Mexico. Things have changed, and although change can be difficult, these changes in the face of your community provide you with an amazing opportunity to share Christ with the nations of the world in your own backyard."

As persecution takes on such a positive role, it may result in a consequent lack of awareness of and concern for the increasing persecution of Christians around the world as believers in the West feel no great need to address the issue. Why, the question may be asked, should we be concerned about something that has such positive results?"

  • 7/30 ~ STRATEGY ~ Sending Overseas Missionaries in Community ~ by George Tissiere and C. Bug (9marks.org)
"If love for one another within a local church distinguishes us as Christ's disciples (John 13:35) … if there is a uniqueness to the display of the gospel through the local church (1 Pet. 2, 1 Cor. 14) … if we desire to model the communal elements of discipleship for new believers in unreached nations … doesn't it makes sense to send people in community to engage in mission, even in overseas mission? We at Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, thought so. We began a discussion in 2005 which culminated in the decision to send groups of members to two unreached overseas cities as church plants."

Are you? If so, you need to know about a growing body of ideas and approaches loosely grouped under the label "business as mission."
  • 7/28 ~ PERSECUTED CHURCH ~ Persecution Update: Somalia, Iraq, China (khouse.org)
"Early in the morning of July 23, 1948, a Bulgarian pastor named Haralan Popov was arrested in Sophia on trumped up charges of espionage. He would spend the next 13 years being starved and tortured in Communist prisons. God was with Popov in prison and afterwards, but one of Popov's greatest grievances was that the Western world knew so little about the suffering of Christians under the Soviets, and that the Christians in the West did so little to help. Remembering Haralan, let's consider a few of our tormented brothers and sisters in Christ, that we can stand with them in prayer. Perhaps by raising a concerted fuss on different fronts, we can bring them some comfort and encouragement, relief and aid."

"I had thought for so long that the Guttenberg revolution was a worldwide phenomenon. I grew up thinking that literacy was the one thing the world needed to level the playing field for everyone. Then one day I made an alarming discovery: five hundred years after the invention of the printing press only thirty-three percent of the world are truly literate. This stopped me dead in my tracks. Imagine the banner headline: “Approximately sixty-seven percent of the people of the world are non-literate oral learners! Read all about it!”"

  • 7/14 ~ PASSING THE BATON WELL ~ The Invincible Determination of Wilberforce and Buxton (therebelution.com)
"Wilberforce succeeded in abolishing the slave trade in the British Empire — but not slavery itself. As he continued to work towards emancipation for existing slaves, Wilberforce realized that the cause would need younger men to continue the work. So, in 1821 he asked Thomas Fowell Buxton ... to take over leadership of the campaign. Buxton himself was an exceptional man, a strong Christian, and a dedicated abolitionist. For twelve years he served as leader of the abolition movement in the House of Commons — not only persevering, but succeeding. In 1833, slavery was officially abolished in the British Empire — one month after Wilberforce’s death."
  • 7/13 ~ LANGUAGE LEARNING ~ Language Learning Is Communication - Is Ministry! by E. Thomas Brewster & Elizabeth S. Brewster (from urbana.org weekly newsletter)
"The missionary anthropologist Charles H. Kraft was asked, "How much time should one who goes to serve as a two month short-term missionary spend in language learning?" Kraft responded: "Two months." The questioner continued, "What about one who stays six months?" "Then spend six months in language learning." "And if he stays two years?" "There is nothing he could do that would communicate more effectively than spending those two years in language learning." Kraft continued, "Indeed, if we do no more than engage in the process of language learning we will have communicated more of the essentials of the Gospel than if we devote ourselves to any other task I can think of."
  • 7/11 ~ THE NATIONS HAVE COME TO US ~ Who Moved My Church? by Oliver R. Phillips (missionstrategy.org)
"The two challenges that should demand immediate attention are one, the rapidly changing immigrant landscape here in the US & Canada, and two, addressing the tragic gap between existing and emerging leadership styles in our congregations and districts. If Dorothy of Oz has taught us anything it is that “we are not in Kansas anymore!” Under both scenarios, the church, as we have known it in the past, has moved. "As travel becomes easier and cheaper, more and more churches receive international visitors—either guests connected to a global partnership endeavor or visitors introduced by one of their field missionaries or agency partners. For maximum benefit of both hosts and visitors, hospitality in these situations must consist of more than providing a room and meals. You will want to prepare your congregation to understand their role in making this a spiritual highlight for both sides."

"John tells us that ‘the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ’, John1:17. It is therefore not surprising that, rather than condemning businessmen for their ungodly behaviour, Jesus said more about the behaviour that is pleasing to God: ‘Do to others what you would have them do to you’, Matt.7:12. However, this is, of course entirely consistent with the commands given to Moses. I want to be treated honestly, so I treat others honestly. I do not want to be exploited, so I do not exploit others. Let us look at what this might mean in business today.

John MacArthur, Phil Johnson and others speak of contextualization negatively and believe that it obscures the Gospel. Mark Driscoll and others advocate what they call contextualization as the only way to make the Gospel relative to people today. Unfortunately, the rhetoric swirls around the use of foul language and sexual references in the pulpit. The result is an inaccurate use of the term contextualization that threatens this essential tool of Christian communicators

Bharatendu Prakash, from the Organic Farming Association of India, told the Press Association: "Farmers' suicides are increasing due to a vicious circle created by money lenders. • 5/05 ~ BAM ~ Is Business as Mission Mixing Oil and Water? by Bob Kuhlman (Business As Mission Network)
"Remember the experiment you did as a kid in school, pouring a cup of oil into a bottle of water? No matter what you did, the oil sank below the water. They just don’t mix. ... At first glance you might think mixing business and missions would have the same result. After all, the goal of missions is to get people into heaven. And the goal of business is to make money. It looks like the only way they fit is when the business person gives money to the missionary to save souls! Obvious realities. Natural conclusion. Right? Well, let’s take a harder look at this."
  • 5/04 ~ BLESSING THE NATIONS AMONG US ~ A Canadian Case Study in Diaspora Missiology by Charlene de Haan (Lausanne World Pulse)
"Statistics in Canada predict that visible minorities, mainly South Asian and Chinese, will be majority populations in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal by 2017. This is already true in one community in a little-known neighbourhood where thirty-five apartment buildings house thirty thousand people—ninety percent of them Asian. A small group of Christians intentionally moved into the neighbourhood in order to share the love of Christ with this strategic diaspora community."
  • 5/02 ~ EXAMINING PRIORITIES ~ Critical Ministries Study by Ed Stetzer (edstetzer.com)
“LifeWay Research recently finished a survey that reveals the ministry priorities of pastoral leadership in churches of various sizes in the SBC. The study, "Critical Ministries and Their Leadership," surveyed 801 Southern Baptist pastors about what they believed were the most critical ministries in their churches, whether those ministries have effective leadership in place and how they relate to those ministry leaders." NOTE: The reason for posting to this particular article is because prayer is listed as the lowest priority. May God grant us grace and focus to pray ongoingly for the restoration of prayer in the lives and ministries of our pastors. To add "feet" to your prayers, see the Praying Pastors Project.
  • 5/01 ~ LEADERSHIP ~ The Seven Laws of Leadership Selection by Floyd McClung (floydandsallie.org)
"I have been learning about leadership selection for more than forty years. I was selected by men and women who believed in me at a very young age, and from them, and the example of Jesus and Paul in the New Testament, I have learned the seven laws of leadership selection. Perhaps “laws” is too strong a word. Maybe “truths” or “biblical principles” is a more accurate way to describe what I have learned. I draw these truths from the life of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. I practice these laws. Others have modeled them to me. I study them in the lives of effective leaders. I hope they help you on your journey."
