~ E-MAGAZINE ~ Practical Mobilization: Vacations with a Purpose by
Shane Bennett (missionscatalyst.org)
"Maybe some mobilizers do not go on vacations. Some of the people
we aim to mobilize, however, just might still take vacations. What if we could
persuade them to choose ones that don't involve long naps on warm beaches,
but rather, joint-pain inducing work in rugged mission outposts around the
world? Seems unlikely doesn't it? But it's happening. Check out excerpts
from the article ... I've interjected some thoughts and questions throughout
to help us consider the ramifications of this idea for us as mobilizers.

~ SHORT-TERM MISSIONS ~ Ten Ways to Guide a Missile by Karen
Hatley (WorldConneX)
"Short-term missions ... is indeed alive. As David
Mays notes the trend has increased dramatically over the past few decades.
The prevailing issue concerning short-term missions is conducting them in
a healthy way for all involved: (1) The Senders (the church) (2) The Goer-Guests;
and (3) The Host-Receivers. How can the fast-flying often out of control projectile
of short-term missions be guided? Here are ten recommendations."

~ REACHING OUR SAMARIA ~ The Samaritan Life by Tim Stafford
(Christianity Today)
"Denis Haack, who critiques films, books, and music on his Ransom
Fellowship website, says that Christians often act like they live in Jerusalem.
Not so, argues Haack—we live in Babylon, as aliens and strangers. Why, therefore,
are we surprised when we see a movie that offends our values? Babylonian movies
reflect Babylonian values, not Christian ones. I liked Haack's point,
but I had a nagging sense that he was missing something. Eventually I figured
out what: We don't live in Babylon. We live in Samaria."

Bill Walsh (Desiring God Blog)
" How does a group of Westerners develop curriculum relevant to non-Western
cultures? A few of us on the International
Outreach team have been grappling with this question. We’ve started to
plan and dream about writing non-formal curriculum for training indigenous
church leaders, based on Piper sermon manuscripts."

~ MISSION & MUSIC ~ Bach the Evangelist by Nathan Hoff
(trinitypastor.blogspot.com)
" ... why do Bach’s melodies and harmonies, so alien to the Asian
ear, appeal to the Japanese? Some musicologists attribute this to Francis
Xavier and other Jesuit missionaries, who introduced the Gregorian chant to
Japan and built organs from bamboo pipes 400 years ago. Though Christianity
was soon squashed, elements of its music infiltrated traditional folk song.
Four centuries later, this curious fact is now enabling tens of thousands
of people in one of the most secularized nations on earth to turn to Christianity
via Bach."
